Greece implements €1.2 billion in hydraulic infrastructure projects
At the 9th Infrastructure and Transport Conference (ITC 2026), Greek officials detailed a massive expansion of hydraulic infrastructure to combat the climate crisis. Charalampos Mugdalis, Special Secretary for Hydraulic Works and Buildings at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, announced that over 50 major hydraulic projects are currently underway with a total budget of €1.2 billion.
These projects aim to transition from reactive repairs to proactive fortification, focusing on water supply, irrigation, and flood protection. Key initiatives include the construction of the Myrtos dam in Crete, the Asopos dam in Corinthia, and stream adjustments in Attica (Eschatia, Acharnes, and Rafina). Additionally, the Nestorio dam in Kastoria and Almopaio dam in Pella have been tendered, with four more major projects awaiting signature.
Argyro Zerva, General Secretary of EU Funds and Infrastructure at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, announced the abolition of the distinction between irrigation and water supply projects. These will now be funded through a unified fund (EPES). The strategy emphasizes integrated planning to address risks of desertification, drought, and flooding, particularly in high-pressure tourist and island regions.
