Greece implements drone mosquito control and rabbitfish management

In Greece, regional authorities are implementing measures to combat environmental and biological threats. In the Thessaly region, specifically in Mati Tirnavou, the Thessaly Region is conducting intensive mosquito spraying using drones to mitigate the spread of the West Nile virus.

Simultaneously, the South Aegean and Crete regions are finalizing a joint proposal with the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (ELKETHE) to implement a pilot program for managing rabbitfish populations. This initiative aims to support coastal fisheries by offering financial incentives of 5.33 euros per kilogram of rabbitfish collected. The program is expected to run until the end of 2029, though officials have expressed concerns regarding the increased workload caused by understaffed regional services.
