Greece implements management plan for Gyaros Island biodiversity

The Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy has published a Management Plan for the biodiversity protection area of Gyaros Island and its marine zone. Following a Presidential Decree issued in April 2026, the plan establishes specific protection zones and land-use categories to preserve the island's unique natural resources.

The implementation and monitoring of the plan will be managed by the Natural Environment and Climate Change Organization (OFYPEKA). As a Natura 2000 site since 2011, Gyaros serves as a critical breeding ground for the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) and hosts high-priority species, including protected seabirds, Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows, the Gyaros black snake, and the Fritillaria obliqua flora.

The management strategy is built upon five thematic pillars: the conservation and restoration of protected subjects, monitoring and research, information and education, the specification of terms and restrictions for human activities, and supervision and guarding. To minimize environmental impact, the plan introduces specific regulations for tourism and mild activities based on the area's carrying capacity, including the installation of eco-friendly mooring systems to protect seagrass meadows and reduce disturbances to local wildlife.
