Greece implements native species strategy to restore wildfire-damaged forests

Greece is implementing ecological restoration projects to recover forests damaged by years of wildfires. Rather than simply replanting trees, the strategy focuses on using native species, such as various types of holm oaks (Quercus) and other Mediterranean flora adapted to local conditions.

These efforts are part of a broader initiative to restore degraded ecosystems, reduce soil erosion, protect biodiversity, and increase forest resilience against future fires. The Greek government has included the restoration of degraded forest ecosystems using primarily native species within its National Reforestation Plan.

Experts emphasize that recovery requires more than just planting seedlings. Specialists must evaluate fire intensity, soil health, slope, previous vegetation, natural regeneration capacity, and local climate conditions to prevent issues like sediment runoff into riverbeds caused by exposed soil.
