Greece implements Neighborhood Nannies childcare subsidy program

Greece has implemented the ‘Neighborhood Nannies’ program, a national initiative providing financial assistance to parents for the in-home care of children aged two months to 2.5 years. The program aims to support families, particularly mothers, in returning to or remaining in the workforce.

Financial aid varies based on employment status: 500 euros per month for full-time care and 300 euros for part-time care. Additionally, student mothers can receive 300 euros until they complete their studies, and unemployed mothers are eligible for 300 euros for a period of three months to assist in their job search.

Grandparents are eligible to register as caregivers provided they meet specific requirements, including holding a compulsory education diploma, attending an online seminar, and completing first aid training for infants. Those with degrees in childcare are exempt from the initial seminar.

According to Deputy Minister of Social Cohesion and Family Elena Rapti, 3,273 caregivers and 7,173 beneficiaries have been approved so far, with 1,761 contracts signed. The government aims to reach 4,500 contracts. To reduce bureaucracy, certain documentation, such as criminal record certificates, has been replaced by solemn declarations.
