Greece implements new Cadastre ownership and correction procedures

New procedures are being implemented for the Greek Cadastre regarding property ownership claims and technical corrections. Starting September 16, changes affect individuals claiming ownership through acquisitive prescription for properties currently registered under ‘unknown owner’ status.

To rectify these records, a mandatory mediation process involving a certified legal mediator has been established. Claimants must prove 20 years of continuous possession by providing at least two forms of evidence, such as utility bills (electricity, water, telephone), rental agreements, tax declarations (e.g., E9), building permits, or certified topographic diagrams.

Additionally, starting September 18, a new digital process via ‘metavoles’ will be introduced for correcting property boundaries, areas, and geometric data. In cases where the Greek State is a defendant, its participation in the mandatory initial hearing is required; failure to submit documentation regarding rights in a timely manner will be interpreted as a waiver of those rights.
