Greece plans 13 billion euro debt repayment and economic roadmap
Greece is entering a period of significant fiscal activity, highlighted by plans to make an early repayment of approximately 13 billion euros in public debt by 2026. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has characterized this debt reduction as a form of ‘national liberation’ for the state. This follows a period where the country has already completed early repayments totaling 36 billion euros since 2019.
In parallel, the government is finalizing the requirements to unlock 6.7 billion euros from the Recovery Fund. This involves completing 123 milestones by the August 31 deadline to facilitate the final payment request in September. The government also intends to present its economic roadmap for 2027-2030 at the Thessaloniki International Fair in early September.
Regarding social welfare, new regulations will increase survivor pensions for approximately 8,552 public sector beneficiaries to 70% of the deceased's pension. Additionally, the e-EFKA has announced the schedule for September 2026 pension payments, with non-salaried group payments beginning on August 26, 2026, and salaried group payments following on August 28, 2026.
