Greece implements new industrial framework for critical raw materials

Greece has implemented a new Special Spatial Framework for Industry and the Supply Chain, effective as of August 27. This framework replaces the previous 2009 guidelines and establishes a spatial foundation for industry with short-term goals for 2030 and long-term goals for 2040.

A primary objective of the new policy is to integrate critical and strategic raw materials into the core of national industrial policy. The framework aims to move beyond mere extraction by connecting mineral deposits to a broader production chain, including processing, manufacturing, recycling, and logistics. This approach seeks to foster greater vertical integration within the country.

The initiative specifically targets raw materials deemed critical or strategic by the European Union, aligning with EU Regulation 2024/1252. By focusing on these materials, the policy aims to enhance supply chain security, support the green transition, and reduce European dependence on third countries. While this framework provides spatial support for industrial facilities, the specific spatial organization of mining activities remains subject to a forthcoming Special Spatial Framework for Mineral Raw Materials.
