Greece implements new salary framework for 150,000 uniformed personnel
A new salary framework is being implemented for approximately 150,000 uniformed personnel in Greece, including police, firefighters, coast guards, and military members. The restructuring moves away from a system based solely on rank, instead integrating years of service, professional background, positions of responsibility, and specific working conditions into compensation calculations.
For personnel who assumed leadership roles starting October 1, 2025, retroactive payments are expected to range from 960 to 6,000 euros depending on rank. Specific monthly allowances for leadership positions include 500 euros for chiefs, 450 euros for lieutenant generals, 400 euros for chiefs of staff, and 350 euros for operation coordinators. Other specialized police service allowances range from 100 to 350 euros.
The new system introduces four distinct salary categories for police, firefighters, and coast guards. In Category A, basic salaries start at 1,320 euros for those with one to three years of service and can reach 3,000 euros for those with 39 or more years. Furthermore, public sector salary adjustments in 2027 are expected to be linked to changes in the minimum wage. In the armed forces, daily food allowances for soldiers were increased to 6.40 euros in 2026.
