Greece to install 31,938 smart lighting poles on regional roads
Greece is implementing a large-scale project to install 31,938 autonomous smart lighting poles across its 13 regions. The initiative aims to cover approximately 958 kilometers of the regional road network, specifically targeting dangerous areas that currently lack sufficient illumination.
As of the latest reports, infrastructure has already been installed at 8,693 locations. The project is managed by the Ministries of Digital Governance and Interior and is funded by the Recovery and Resilience Facility.
The new lighting systems are designed to operate independently of the existing electrical grid, making them ideal for remote or inaccessible locations where traditional wiring would be too costly. Each pole is equipped with high-efficiency LED technology, a photovoltaic panel, and a lithium battery for energy storage. Additionally, the system features remote telemanagement capabilities, allowing regional authorities to monitor performance, identify faults, and adjust lighting levels based on real-time conditions to enhance road safety and visibility.
