Greece implements strict new penalties for mobile phone use while driving

Greece has implemented a new Highway Code (KOK) that introduces significantly harsher penalties for drivers using mobile phones while behind the wheel. The legislation aims to reduce road fatalities by addressing the delayed reaction times caused by phone use.

For offenses occurring without an accident, first-time offenders face a €350 fine and a one-month license suspension. Subsequent offenses increase the penalties to €1,000 and a six-month ban for a second violation, and €2,000 with a one-year ban for a third.

If phone use results in a traffic accident, penalties escalate. A second offense carries a €2,000 fine and a four-year driving ban, while a third offense can result in a €4,000 fine and an eight-year ban. In cases involving serious injury or death, the law allows for prison sentences of up to 10 or 20 years, respectively, with life imprisonment possible if multiple people are killed.
