Greece implements stricter Highway Code penalties

Greece has revised its Highway Code (KOK) to implement stricter sanctions for repeat traffic offenders. The primary objective of the update is to curb dangerous and illegal behaviors on Greek roads through increased penalties and enhanced surveillance.

Key measures include the introduction of a recidivism regime. If a driver commits the same violation within five years of the first offense, they face increased administrative sanctions. A third occurrence within five years of the second offense results in even more severe penalties. Notably, drivers who commit repeat offenses that lead to license suspension may be required to retake their driving exams from the beginning to regain their license.

Surveillance is being bolstered by the installation of hundreds of monitoring cameras, including 388 red-light violation cameras deployed by the Attica Region. Authorities are placing particular emphasis on behaviors linked to serious accidents, such as driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding, running red lights, mobile phone use, and driving in emergency lanes.
