Greece implements stricter speed limits and driving penalties

Greece has implemented a new Road Traffic Code introducing stricter speed limits and increased penalties for drivers. Within residential areas, the general maximum speed limit is now set at 30 km/h. Exceptions allow for speeds up to 50 km/h on one-way streets with at least two lanes, or on two-way roads with two lanes per direction or a dividing median.

Penalties for exceeding these limits are scaled based on the severity of the violation:

• Exceeding the limit by up to 20 km/h results in a 150 euro fine. • Exceeding the limit by 20 to 30 km/h results in a 150 euro fine and a 20-day driving license suspension. • Exceeding the limit by 30 to 50 km/h results in a 350 euro fine and a 30-day driving license and vehicle registration suspension. • Exceeding the limit by more than 50 km/h results in a 700 euro fine and a 60-day driving license suspension.
