Greece implements stricter traffic laws and higher fines

Greece has implemented stricter traffic regulations aimed at reducing serious accidents involving injury or death by half by 2030. These rules, which apply to tourists as well as residents, have been in effect since September 13, 2025.

Key offenses subject to increased penalties include mobile phone use while driving, speeding, parking violations, failure to wear seatbelts, riding motorcycles without helmets, driving under the influence, and ignoring red lights or stop signs. For instance, a first-time offense for using a mobile phone while driving carries a 350 euro fine and a 30-day license suspension. Repeat offenses can lead to fines of up to 2,000 euros and a driving ban of up to one year. If mobile phone use results in an accident, penalties can rise to a 4,000 euro fine and an eight-year license revocation.

Additionally, new speed limits take effect on January 1, 2026. In urban areas with only one lane per direction, the speed limit will be reduced to 30 km/h. Multi-lane main urban roads will maintain a limit of 50 km/h.
