Greece imposes 1,500 euro fines for illegal road signage

Under the current Greek Highway Code, the unauthorized placement of road signage or the illegal occupation of public space can result in significant penalties. Individuals or businesses attempting to claim public roads as private parking by using signs, cones, chairs, or chains face different legal classifications and fines.

Violations related to Article 14, which concerns official signage and signaling, carry an administrative fine of 1,500 euros and can lead to up to 12 months of imprisonment. This article prohibits unauthorized persons from installing, moving, altering, or destroying official signs, as well as placing any items that mimic official signals or obstruct legitimate traffic markings.

In contrast, the illegal occupation of a portion of the road using objects falls under Article 52, which carries different penalties. The law distinguishes between these two types of infractions to ensure that the appropriate legal consequences are applied.
