Greece imposes fines up to 1,500 euros for illegal parking reservations
In Greece, the unauthorized occupation of public space to reserve parking spots in front of homes or businesses can result in significant financial penalties. Individuals often use objects such as signs, chains, cones, chairs, or planters to prevent others from parking in specific areas.
Under the Greek Highway Code, placing unauthorized signs or objects that occupy the roadway or cause confusion for drivers is a violation. Fines can reach up to 1,500 euros, particularly when the items resemble official traffic signs or pose a risk to road safety. In cases of simple unauthorized occupation of public space, administrative fines starting at approximately 350 euros may be applied.
Legally, a private individual cannot unilaterally install a ‘no parking’ sign. Official signage requires permission from the relevant municipal or traffic authorities, typically granted only for legitimate needs such as ensuring access to a private garage or driveway.
