Greece inaugurates Honorary Consulate in New Orleans

Greece has inaugurated its new Honorary Consulate in New Orleans, Louisiana, marking the return of official Greek institutional presence to a city with deep historical ties to the Greek diaspora. The ceremony was attended by Deputy Foreign Minister Alexandras Papadopoulou, Ambassador to the US Antonis Alexandridis, and Honorary Consul John Dennis Georges, along with local officials and members of the Greek community.

In a video message, Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis highlighted the strategic importance of the region. Beyond its historical significance—noting that New Orleans hosted the first Greek consulate in the US in 1864—the city serves as a vital hub for modern Greek-American cooperation. The new consulate aims to strengthen ties in key sectors including shipping, energy, and defense.

The Lower Mississippi region and the Gulf Coast are critical to the American energy economy, particularly regarding liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports. For Greece, which maintains one of the world's largest commercial fleets, the consulate provides a strategic foothold in a major maritime and logistics center, facilitating connections between US energy infrastructure and European markets.
