Greece increases working hours for seasonal firefighters

The Greek Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection has approved an increase in working hours for seasonal firefighters to ensure timely payment of overtime during the wildfire season. Minister Evangelos Tournas signed the decision, which adds 156 overtime hours, 60 hours for Sundays and holidays, and 204 night hours per seasonal firefighter.

The total additional expenditure is estimated at €3,043,900. Of this, €1,491,900 is allocated for night and holiday work, while €1,552,000 is designated for overtime.

This administrative move coincides with protests by seasonal firefighters in Tripoli, Peloponnese. Demonstrators wore black armbands to honor deceased colleagues and raised demands for permanent 12-month employment, equal treatment, and the removal of age limits in recruitment. Protesters argued that fire protection needs are not seasonal and called for their experience to be utilized year-round. A larger demonstration is planned for August 31 at the Maximos Mansion in Athens.
