Greece inflation rises to 5.1% in September amid energy price surge

Inflation in Greece rose significantly to 5.1% in September, up from 3.7% in August, according to Eurostat data. This surge is primarily driven by a 25.4% year-on-year increase in energy prices, including heating oil, natural gas, and electricity. This spike places Greece among the five countries with the highest inflation rates in the Eurozone, where the average inflation rate reached 3.8% in September.

The rising cost of energy is creating substantial pressure on households and businesses. For a typical 100-square-meter home, heating costs are projected to increase significantly, with heating oil potentially adding up to 120 euros per month compared to previous periods.

Economic sentiment remains low. Data from IOVE indicates that 58% of Greek consumers report they are barely making ends meet, and 82% of households do not believe saving money will be possible over the next 12 months. Consumers in Greece are noted as being among the most pessimistic in the European Union.
