Greece infrastructure: Major upgrades to metro and bus fleets
Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Giorgos Kotsiras highlighted significant progress in Greece's transport sector during the 9th Infrastructure and Transport Congress (ITC 2026). He noted that improvements in infrastructure, stricter road traffic codes, and increased police inspections have contributed to a reduction in road fatalities.
In urban transport, Kotsiras reported that the landscape in Athens and Thessaloniki has changed significantly. During the first eight months of 2026, there were 4,200 more metro trips compared to the same period in 2025. He also emphasized the success of 24-hour operations for the metro, trams, and selected bus lines on Saturdays.
Regarding the bus fleet, the Minister stated that Attica is undergoing its largest renewal program in decades, involving the introduction of 1,076 new anti-pollution buses. Additionally, the ‘Ariadne’ program continues to enhance security within public transport hubs.
