Greece intensifies tax audits and transparency oversight

The Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) is launching an intensive effort to complete thousands of pending tax audits. This initiative aims to prevent the statute of limitations from expiring on numerous cases by the end of 2026. Priority will be given to cases from 2020 involving VAT and income tax, as well as 2022 cases subject to a three-year limitation period. Audit centers must establish priority lists by September 30 based on tax risk and expected state revenue.

Separately, a report from the National Transparency Authority has identified various irregularities within state and private sectors. The findings include illegal direct assignments and safety concerns in kindergartens, playgrounds, and campsites. The investigation has led to disciplinary accountability for 18 mayors, along with numerous department heads, local government officials, and state employees. The report details thousands of complaints, resulting in hundreds of criminal prosecutions and disciplinary referrals across various public services, including health, social welfare, and local administration.
