Greece islands report dual pricing for tourists

Reports from Greek islands indicate a growing trend of dual pricing targeting tourists and card users. Establishments are allegedly quoting lower prices for cash transactions while applying significantly higher rates for payments made via credit card or POS terminals. For example, a food item priced at 4.70 euros in cash may increase to 6 euros when a customer uses a card.

This practice is being flagged by consumers and tourists as a method to evade taxes, hide income, and bypass digital monitoring systems like myDATA. Such discrepancies allow businesses to accumulate substantial undeclared revenue by charging a premium to those who insist on receipts or electronic payments.

Authorities have intensified inspections in tourist regions. Data from late July 2026 shows that inspectors identified over 13,000 tax violations. Consumers are encouraged to report these incidents of misleading pricing and tax evasion to the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) and consumer protection services.
