Greece issues diplomatic note to Turkey over maritime parks
Greece has issued a formal diplomatic démarche to Turkey in response to Ankara's unilateral decision to establish two maritime national parks in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean. Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis stated that these parks, which cover approximately 2.3 million hectares, are contrary to international and EU law and do not produce any legal effects for Greece.
The newly established areas include the Fethiye-Kaş and North Aegean maritime national parks. Athens contends that these zones extend beyond Turkey's six-mile territorial waters, encroaching upon international waters and the Greek continental shelf. Greece has informed European authorities and institutions of the situation and is considering further actions, including legal recourse through international organizations like the United Nations.
Turkey has responded through Foreign Ministry spokesperson Öncü Keçeli, asserting that Greece's recent maritime and industrial framework declarations will have no legal consequences for Turkey. Turkey maintains that its actions are consistent with the Athens Declaration on Friendly Relations and Good Neighborliness and expressed readiness for cooperation while defending its sovereign rights.
