The General Secretariat of Civil Protection in Greece forecast a very high wildfire risk (category 4) for the Attica, Evia, Lesbos and Chios regions on 3–5 August 2026, prompting a Red Code mobilisation. The Red Code activates the full National Civil Protection Mechanism, deploying personnel, vehicles and aerial surveillance, and imposes preventive measures such as a temporary ban on vehicle traffic and camping in vulnerable forest areas.

Citizens are urged to avoid activities that could ignite fires, including burning dry grass, using spark‑producing tools, outdoor barbecues and discarding lit cigarettes. The government also announced that, starting in September, homeowners whose houses are damaged by the fires will receive 100 % compensation for reconstruction. Turkey’s Civil Protection agency issued a matching red alarm for the same Greek islands, coordinating increased patrols by fire, police and armed forces and restricting vehicle and visitor access to high‑risk zones.
