Greece issues Red Code wildfire alerts for Attica and multiple regions
The General Secretariat of Civil Protection has issued high-level wildfire risk alerts across much of Greece. For Monday, August 24, a ‘Red Code’ alert (risk category 4) was issued for Attica, including Kythira, as well as several regional units in Central Greece (Phthiotis, Boeotia, Evia/Skyros), the Peloponnese (Corinthia, Argolis, Laconia), the Cyclades, and the North Aegean (Lesvos, Chios, Samos, Ikaria). This status triggers the full mobilization of the National Civil Protection Mechanism, including human resources and technical equipment.
For Tuesday, August 25, the risk remains elevated, with many regions placed under category 3 (high risk). This includes Attica, Crete, the Ionian Islands, and various parts of mainland Greece such as Thessaly and Macedonia. Authorities have advised citizens to avoid outdoor activities that could spark fires, such as burning dry grass, using power tools like circular saws, or operating outdoor grills.
In addition to the wildfire warnings, meteorologists report a significant heatwave, with temperatures in Attica expected to approach 40 degrees Celsius. The Fire Service has activated its second stage of operational readiness and placed personnel in affected areas on partial standby to manage potential emergencies.
