Greece issues high wildfire warnings for multiple regions
The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has issued warnings regarding high wildfire risks across Greece for September 6 and 7, 2026. A very high fire risk (category 4) is forecast for Monday, September 7, in several regions, including Attica, Crete, the South Aegean, Western Greece, and parts of the Peloponnese and Central Macedonia.
In response to the elevated risk, the National Mechanism has been placed in Red Code status in certain areas, such as Magnesia and the Sporades, triggering full mobilization of personnel and resources. Authorities have implemented various restrictions, including bans on the use of fire in rural areas, the burning of agricultural residues, and certain outdoor activities like welding or using outdoor grills.
In several regions, such as Chalkidiki, Corfu, and parts of Crete, authorities have also imposed bans on the movement and presence of persons and vehicles in protected Natura 2000 areas and specific forest ecosystems to prevent accidental ignitions. Citizens, particularly farmers and beekeepers, are urged to exercise extreme caution during this period.
