Greece issues Red Code wildfire warnings for multiple regions

The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has issued warnings regarding high and very high wildfire risks across various regions of Greece for early September 2026. Several areas have been placed under 'Red Code' status, indicating a very high risk (Category 4) where conditions favor the rapid spread of fires.

Regions under Red Code include Attica, Euboea, Crete, Chios, Ikaria, and the Cyclades. In these areas, the National Mechanism is fully mobilized, deploying personnel and resources to manage potential emergencies. In Attica, specifically within the Rafina-Pikermi municipality, restrictions have been implemented prohibiting the movement and presence of people and vehicles in Natura and forest ecosystems.

Other regions face varying levels of risk. Corfu and Ioannina are under high risk (Category 3), leading to local bans on movement in protected forest areas and parks. Parts of Western Greece, including Achaia, Elis, and Aetolia-Acarnania, are under moderate risk (Category 2). Authorities are urging citizens to avoid activities that could cause accidental fires, such as burning dry grass, using machinery that produces sparks, or outdoor grilling.
