Greece relaunches national prevention program for free breast cancer screenings
Greece has relaunched the “Fofi Gennimata” (formerly “Prolamvano”) national prevention program, beginning with a major phase focused on free breast cancer screenings. Starting October 13, the program is issuing electronic referrals via SMS to approximately 2.38 million women aged 45 to 74, including both insured and uninsured citizens.
The initiative provides free digital mammographies and, if medically indicated, breast ultrasounds. The program is now a permanent national health policy funded entirely by domestic resources. For women who have not activated digital prescriptions, appointments can be scheduled using their AMKA number through the official proliptikes.gov.gr platform.
Health officials noted that the program aims for early diagnosis, which can lead to cure rates exceeding 95%. Following the breast cancer screening phase, the program will expand to include screenings for cardiovascular diseases, cervical cancer, colorectal cancer, kidney dysfunction, and obesity. Previous cycles of the program successfully identified over 554,000 individuals with findings requiring medical attention.
