MedWatch AI tool launched to monitor medical advertising in Greece

Greece's Ministry of Health has launched MedWatch, an artificial intelligence tool designed to monitor and regulate medical advertising and the digital presence of healthcare providers. The initiative, presented by Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis in collaboration with the Panhellenic Medical Association and the Athens Medical Association, aims to detect illegal medical practices, misleading advertisements, and discrepancies between a provider's official license and the services they promote online.

A pilot program conducted in Attica analyzed approximately 8,500 healthcare structures and 9,838 pieces of content, including over 8,000 paid advertisements. The system identified 5,069 potential findings, with 231 structures receiving a “red flag” status for urgent investigation. These flagged entities include 160 non-medical structures, such as aesthetic institutes and spas, and 50 medical practices.

The MedWatch system categorizes findings into four levels of risk. Serious violations are referred to the National Transparency Authority, while other matters are handled by medical associations. The tool is expected to expand nationwide within the next 10 days. Additionally, the Ministry announced the development of a mobile application, expected to be available within a month, which will allow citizens to verify the licenses and authorized medical procedures of private doctors.
