Greece launches MIDA property registry to verify agricultural land

Greece is implementing a new digital verification system through the Property Ownership and Management Registry (MIDA) to oversee land use and ownership. The initial phase of this rollout focuses on agricultural land to align with the strict deadlines for European Union agricultural subsidy payments.

The system aims to prevent discrepancies by cross-referencing four key data points: the Property Identification Number (ATAK), the National Land Registry Code (KAEEK), E9 tax declarations, and electronic lease or concession agreements. If these data points do not match—for instance, if a lease agreement contradicts an E9 filing—the application for subsidies may be flagged for additional inspection, potentially delaying payments.

By utilizing existing information from public authorities, the new model for the 2026 Single Application for Support seeks to move away from manual data entry toward a guided process. The goal is to ensure that those claiming subsidies are the legitimate owners or legal users of the land, while reducing errors, virtual leases, and undeclared land use. Following the agricultural sector, the registry will eventually expand to include houses, holiday homes, and other types of real estate.
