Greece unveils National Housing Strategy 2026-2035

The Greek government has unveiled the National Housing Strategy 2026–2035, a comprehensive ten-year plan designed to address the country's housing crisis. The strategy includes approximately 50 targeted interventions with a total budget exceeding €6.5 billion. Key objectives include increasing the housing stock, promoting homeownership, and expanding social housing.

Major components of the plan involve the repurposing of inactive state-owned land, such as military camps, to build approximately 2,350 high-energy-class social housing units. Specific pilot projects are identified in Patras, Acharnes, and Thessaloniki. Additionally, the plan introduces social rent models and aims to add 8,500 student dormitory spaces.

To stimulate the market, the government is proposing permanent tax incentives for financial institutions that provide low-interest mortgage loans to eligible buyers, moving away from temporary subsidies. The strategy also explores new Golden Visa categories linked to long-term rentals and measures to facilitate the sale of foreclosed properties through the Independent Authority for Public Revenue. Other measures include renovation programs for closed properties and housing initiatives for military personnel.
