Greece launches national initiative to reduce prices on 1,740 essential products

The National Price Reduction Initiative has officially launched in Greece, targeting over 1,740 essential consumer products to alleviate the impact of the high cost of living. The initiative is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Development, the Independent Authority for Market Control and Consumer Protection, and various business stakeholders, including 12 supermarket chains and three toy/school supply retailers.

Price reductions vary across categories. While the average reduction is approximately 9.5%, specific products see much higher discounts. For branded items, more than one in five products feature double-digit price cuts, with some reaching as high as 44%. School supplies are seeing average reductions of about 10%, private label products around 7%, and meat products approximately 7.2% to 7.5%.

Development Minister Takis Theodorakis described the measure as a way to provide “breathing room” for households facing economic uncertainty due to global geopolitical tensions and inflation. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis characterized the initiative as a “tangible relief,” particularly ahead of the new school year. The program is expected to remain in effect for two to four months, with the possibility of adding new products through December.
