Greece launches National Telemedicine Network to boost rural health access

The Greek Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Digital Governance inaugurated the National Telemedicine Network (EDIT) in a series of events in Larisa and Thessaloniki. The project, funded by the EU's Next Generation recovery fund, aims to create a digital health ecosystem that links primary care units with specialist services across the country, especially in remote areas.

The network will comprise 305 doctor‑patient telemedicine stations, 35 doctor‑consultant stations, 500 portable units for health professionals and about 3,000 home‑monitoring systems. Installations have already been completed at 58 stations in the 5th Health Region (Thessaly and Central Greece) and additional stations are operational in the 3rd, 4th and 7th regions. The system also includes five educational centers, three operational‑control centers and supports services such as tele‑consultation, tele‑psychiatry, tele‑monitoring and continuous training for medical staff.

General Secretary of Public Health Christina‑Maria Kravvari described the initiative as one of the most significant digital‑health investments in Greece, marking a shift from hospital‑centric to continuous, interconnected, patient‑focused care.
