Greece launches nationwide investigation into wind farms following Boeotia wildfires
The Arson Crimes Directorate (DAEE) has launched a nationwide preliminary investigation into wind power installations across Greece. This judicial order, issued in consultation with the Prosecutor of the Supreme Court, follows a devastating wildfire in Boeotia that caused significant ecological damage and fatalities.
The investigation aims to determine if wind farms are operating without necessary administrative or environmental permits and whether they comply with technical specifications for installation, maintenance, and operation. Authorities will specifically focus on approximately 450 wind farms and 3,000 turbines, with particular scrutiny applied to facilities that have been linked to previous fire incidents.
In the Boeotia case, inspection reports identified construction errors and deficiencies in the wind farm's electrical supply network as the cause of the sparks that ignited the blaze. Consequently, the Mayor of Stylida, a technical manager, and the wind farm owner have been detained. The DAEE will collect evidence from relevant state services and may employ experts for specialized forensic investigations to establish criminal liability.
