Greece launches Next Generation 112 emergency system
Greece has introduced the Next Generation 112 (NG112) system, a major digital upgrade to the European emergency number. Presented at the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, the €17.5 million project aims to modernize how citizens contact emergency services.
Key features of the upgrade include the e112 mobile application, which allows for communication via video calls and Real-Time Text (RTT) rather than relying solely on voice calls. The system also introduces a ‘silent button’ for users who are in danger but cannot speak, and enhanced geolocation capabilities using GPS and Advanced Mobile Location (AML) technology.
Additionally, the system includes Next Generation eCall for vehicles, which automatically transmits critical data during accidents. The upgrade is designed to improve accessibility for individuals with hearing or speech impairments and provides a unified operational view for emergency responders through the new ENGAGE112 software.
