Greece launches nationwide free skin cancer screening program
Greece's Ministry of Health has announced a new nationwide program for free skin cancer screening, funded by ESPA resources. The initiative aims to facilitate early diagnosis and treatment through the country's network of Health Centers.
A pilot phase of the project, costing approximately 3.7 million euros, will focus on remote and underserved areas, specifically targeting high-risk groups such as farmers, fishermen, and livestock breeders. This pilot will be implemented by the Andreas Syggros Hospital in Athens in collaboration with the Hippokrateio General Regional Hospital of Thessaloniki. The program will utilize digital tools, including dermatoscopy and tele-dermatology, alongside artificial intelligence to prioritize and diagnose cases effectively.
During the 90th Thessaloniki International Fair, Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis also reported significant infrastructure improvements within the National Health System (ESY). This includes the reconstruction of 170 Health Centers and 93 hospitals. Key oncology infrastructure projects were highlighted, such as the newly inaugurated Immunotherapy Center at Papageorgiou Hospital in Thessaloniki and the new Oncology Clinic at the General Hospital of Lamia.
