Greece legislates ‘Right to be Forgotten’ for cancer survivors

Greece has legislated the ‘Right to be Forgotten’ for cancer survivors to prevent discrimination in financial services. Under Law 5317/2026, which incorporates EU Directive 2023/2225, individuals are protected from having their oncological diagnosis used for insurance purposes related to consumer credit contracts.

The protection applies once five years have passed since the completion of active treatment, provided there has been no recurrence of the disease. This measure aims to ensure that survivors do not face economic or social barriers when accessing banking and credit products due to their medical history.

The Hellenic Cancer Federation (ELLOK) welcomed the development, noting that the law establishes a transparent framework for protection. The new provisions are set to take effect on November 20, 2026.
