Greece livestock crisis: Nearly 500,000 animals killed by plague

Greece is facing a severe crisis in its livestock sector due to sheep and goat plague (SGP). Between August 2024 and September 9, 2026, approximately 496,000 animals have died across 2,271 recorded outbreaks.

The Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food has initiated a serological surveillance program across nine regions to detect antibodies against the virus. This program involves blood testing at 153 livestock holdings per region, with laboratory analysis conducted in Larissa, Thessaloniki, and by the ELGO-DEMETER Veterinary Research Institute. The goal is to determine if the virus is circulating undetected or if there has been unauthorized vaccine use.

The Geotechnical Chamber of Greece (GETE) has raised alarms regarding the worsening epidemiological situation and the lack of a clear timeline for herd reconstruction. There are significant concerns regarding the economic impact on producers and the potential for international restrictions on Greek dairy exports, including protected designation of origin (PDO) products like feta cheese. The Chamber is calling for immediate veterinary recruitment, enhanced biosecurity measures, and a formal vaccination strategy.
