Greece mandates transition from paper to European-style driving licenses

In Greece, drivers holding the old pink paper driving licenses must transition to the new European-style plastic card format. Under European legislation, all old paper licenses must be replaced by January 19, 2033, after which they will no longer be valid.

Mandatory replacement is required when a driver reaches the age of 65. For those aged 65 to 80, licenses must be renewed every three years, while drivers over 80 require more frequent renewals accompanied by additional medical examinations. Replacement is also compulsory if a license is lost, stolen, significantly damaged, or if the holder needs to add a new vehicle category or update personal details.

The replacement process can be completed electronically via the gov.gr platform. Requirements include Taxisnet credentials, an uploaded photo and signature through the myPhoto service, and payment of the required electronic fee. The new plastic format offers enhanced security, durability, and easier recognition within and outside the European Union.
