Greece mandates transition from paper to plastic driving licenses

In Greece, drivers using the old pink paper driving licenses must transition to the new European-style plastic card format under specific circumstances. According to European legislation, all old paper licenses will cease to be valid after January 19, 2033.

Mandatory replacement is required when a driver reaches the age of 65, or in cases of severe damage, loss, theft, or when adding a new vehicle category. Drivers over 65 must renew their licenses every three years, while those over 80 face more frequent renewals and additional medical examinations.

The replacement process can be completed electronically via the gov.gr platform. Requirements for the digital application include Taxisnet credentials, a registered photo and signature through the myPhoto service, and the payment of an electronic fee. While not all drivers are required to switch immediately, many are choosing to upgrade voluntarily due to the increased durability and security features of the new cards.
