Greece: Mandatory driver's license renewal guidelines
In Greece, drivers using the traditional pink paper driver's licenses must transition to the modern European-standard plastic card under specific conditions. While the final deadline for the complete replacement of all old paper licenses is January 19, 2033, mandatory replacement is required when a driver reaches the age of 65. Following this age, licenses must be renewed every three years, with more frequent renewals and additional medical examinations required after age 80.
Mandatory replacement is also required in cases of severe damage, loss, or theft of the old document, or if a driver wishes to add a new vehicle category or modify existing license details. The replacement process can be completed electronically via the gov.gr platform, provided the applicant has Taxisnet credentials, has registered a photo and signature through the myPhoto service, and has paid the required electronic fee.
Although not mandatory for all drivers immediately, many are choosing to upgrade voluntarily. The new European-style licenses are more durable, easier to carry, and feature enhanced security characteristics to reduce the risk of forgery, while also ensuring easier recognition within and outside the European Union.
