Greece marks 77th anniversary of the end of the Civil War

The anniversary of the end of the Greek Civil War marks 77 years since the conflict concluded in 1949. The six-year struggle, which lasted from 1943 to 1949, was fought between forces seeking to establish a Soviet-style regime under the leadership of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) and those defending the existing bourgeois social system.

The conflict ended as the remnants of the Democratic Army crossed borders toward Tashkent. The victory of the anti-communist forces saw a broad coalition of political entities, including Liberals, Populists, Royalists, and Venizelists.

The war left a complex legacy in Greece, which is noted for having faced three forms of totalitarianism—Italian fascism, German Nazism, and Soviet communism—within a single decade. While the post-war state was not a perfect democracy, the conflict's lasting impact includes deep-seated social divisions, resentment, and a culture of marginalization among the defeated.
