Greece marks anniversary of fatal Libya humanitarian mission

The anniversary of a tragic incident involving a Greek humanitarian mission in Libya has prompted a public plea from the mother of one of the victims. The mission was deployed in September 2023 to provide medical and humanitarian aid following devastating floods in the Derna region.

On September 17, 2023, while traveling from Benghazi to Derna, the mission's vehicle was involved in a severe collision with another vehicle, which subsequently caught fire. The accident resulted in the deaths of five members of the Greek Armed Forces and injured six others.

Among the deceased were Lieutenant Commander Glykeria Memekidou, Squadron Leader Evangelia Andreadaki, and Sergeant Georgios Voulgaris. The mother of Glykeria Memekidou expressed her wish that her daughter be remembered every year on this date.
