Greece marks anniversary of National Liberation Front founding
September 27 marks the anniversary of the founding of the National Liberation Front (EAM) in 1941. Established during the Nazi occupation of Greece, the organization was formed through a founding meeting held in Exarcheia, Athens.
EAM was created by representatives from several political groups, including the Communist Party of Greece, the Socialist Party, the Union of Popular Democracy, and the Agrarian Party. Its primary goal was to organize a collective, nationwide resistance against the occupying Axis powers—Germany, Italy, and Bulgaria—as well as local collaborationist governments.
The movement became the largest resistance organization in Greece, playing a significant role in the struggle against the occupiers. However, its history is also marked by the intense political conflicts that followed, including the Dekemvriana events and the subsequent Greek Civil War.
