Greek Ministry of Education issues new school excursion guidelines
The Greek Ministry of Education has issued new clarifying instructions regarding the organization and implementation of school excursions and educational activities. The new ministerial decision aims to establish order in a previously chaotic field, incorporating recommendations from the National Transparency Authority to enhance safety and transparency.
Key updates include clarified requirements for documentation, insurance coverage, and cooperation with travel agencies. For instance, documentation for operating licenses and fire safety is only required when activities take place in private spaces; public facilities are exempt. Additionally, schools may now organize a second educational activity within the same month if approved by the Teachers' Association.
However, educational federations, including the Teachers' Federation of Greece (DOE) and the Federation of Secondary Education Employees (OLME), have expressed concerns. They argue that the new framework increases bureaucratic burdens and shifts disproportionate responsibility onto teachers regarding the safety of students, transport, and venues.
Andreas Niannis, Director of Studies for Secondary Education, defended the measures, stating that increased procedures serve as essential safety safeguards. He noted that the framework is subject to improvement based on feedback from the educational community during its implementation.
