Greece Ministry of Health prioritizes mental health prevention

Greek Deputy Health Minister Eirini Agapidaki has outlined key priorities for mental health prevention in observance of World Mental Health Day. The Ministry of Health is focusing on early intervention through homes, schools, and primary healthcare, with a specific emphasis on children, adolescents, and families.

Key initiatives include the nationwide implementation of the Triple P positive parenting program, which has already engaged 6,513 parents and caregivers, and the operation of the first Model Community Center for Youth Mental Health (ages 17-24). The Ministry also highlighted the importance of the 10306 helpline and Community Mental Health Centers (KOMY) to ensure support reaches remote areas.

Agapidaki noted the impact of social media on youth, stating that research shows three out of four young people engage in ‘doomscrolling,’ which negatively affects mood, sleep, and concentration. She emphasized that the goal is to provide free, accessible, and stigma-free support before individuals reach a crisis point.
