Greece motorway toll exemptions for specific groups

Under the current institutional framework for Greek motorways, specific categories of drivers and vehicles are exempt from paying tolls. These exemptions are managed by motorway companies and primarily target vulnerable social groups, emergency services, and specific transit conditions.

Key beneficiaries include:

• Residents of municipalities located near toll stations, particularly along the Egnatia Odos and its perpendicular axes. • Unemployed drivers who hold a valid unemployment card, provided the vehicle is registered in their name. • Persons with disabilities (PwD) and the vehicles serving them, upon presentation of a valid parking permit or special war disabled identity card.

Emergency and public service vehicles are fully exempt for all types of missions, including ambulances (EKAB), fire services, police vehicles, Civil Protection, and Armed Forces vehicles. Roadside assistance vehicles also qualify if they display official markings and are on duty.

Additionally, state vehicles with special license plates (such as those from Ministries, Parliament, or National Defense) and diplomatic vehicles with CD plates are exempt based on international conventions and state regulations. Most exemptions require a digital application process involving the submission of documents in PDF or JPG format.
