Greece moves forward with AI Act alignment legislation

On 16 July the Greek Parliament’s Committee on Public Administration, Public Order and Justice approved the draft law “Measures for the implementation of the European AI Regulation”. The bill, prepared by the Ministry of Digital Governance, was backed only by New Democracy; opposition parties abstained or voted against it. Minister Dimitris Papastergios said the law will equip authorities with staff, resources and infrastructure to protect citizens and national security, noting five core provisions: the definition of personal‑data protection as a central principle; the creation of an AI coordination and expertise centre at the Hellenic Telecommunications and Post Commission (EETT); the establishment of regulatory sandboxes; a unified system for handling complaints; and a national registry of AI systems. He added that “democracy must remain stronger than algorithms”.

Special Secretary of Artificial Intelligence and Data Governance Vasilis Karkatzounis outlined Greece’s preparation for the EU AI Act, stressing that the first phase will focus on mapping, awareness‑raising and building a responsible AI culture rather than imposing massive fines. “Innovation must develop within a trust environment,” he said. Karkatzounis described plans for an oversight system, an AI Factory, high‑performance computing resources and open data, aiming to integrate AI responsibly in the public sector while safeguarding fundamental rights.
