Greece naval fleet scenario: 14 frigates and 224 VLS cells by 2030
A Turkish analysis has outlined a potential scenario for the Hellenic Navy's fleet composition after 2030, projecting a force of 14 frigates equipped with a total of 224 Vertical Launch System (VLS) cells.
The proposed fleet structure includes four FDI HN 'Kimon' class frigates, two Italian FREMM frigates (with the possibility of two more), four modernized MEKO 200HN vessels, and the retention of four older Elli-class frigates. The analysis emphasizes that the 224 VLS cells are a critical metric, as they determine the immediate availability of guided missiles for anti-aircraft defense and other mission profiles.
While the MEKO vessels already possess VLS capabilities, the analysis notes that upgrading their sensors and electronics is essential for effective weapon utilization. Furthermore, the combination of FDI and FREMM units, alongside MH-60R helicopters, is expected to significantly enhance anti-submarine warfare capabilities in the Eastern Mediterranean. This projection is presented as a potential strategic configuration rather than an officially confirmed Greek government plan.
