Greece: New biometric ID card issuance and update requirements
Greek citizens are transitioning to new biometric identity cards that comply with European standards. While old blue police IDs remain valid for domestic transactions within Greece, they are no longer recognized as valid travel documents for international travel, including within the Schengen Area, following European regulations effective August 3, 2026.
Upon receiving the new ID, citizens must update their information with various service providers to avoid disruptions. Key entities requiring updates include banks (via e-banking or in-person), insurance companies (for health, auto, or life policies), mobile and internet providers, and utility companies such as PPC (DEI) and EYDAP. Additionally, employers should receive copies for HR records, and digital payment applications like Revolut or Viva Wallet require uploading photos of both sides of the new document.
The issuance process is managed by the Hellenic Police. Citizens can schedule appointments through official government electronic services. The standard cost for issuing or replacing an old ID is €10.50, which includes a €10 electronic fee (code 4485). The process involves biometric data collection and the submission of required documentation, such as the old ID and necessary stamps.
